Become an AdvocateMy local dive “team” consisted of three handicap-trained adaptive dive buddies- all volunteers with Denver Adapted Divers, with John Sherman, head of the program and captain of the team. The on-site dive team consisted of another three local dive buddies associated with Mayan Divers; Mark was the lead dive master, Coco was the dive master in training, and Andy was our fearless boat captain. Mark, a true Zen Master of the ocean, embodied a quietude and calmness about him that felt inherently supportive, and witnessing his calm voice in my ear at every dive stating he "had me and not to worry” was all I needed to hear for me to absolutely surrender to the entire experience.
All in all, I completed 10 dives over five days, witnessing once again the absolute beauty of the ocean with its dreamlike wonderland that exists under the surface of the water. The reef is alive and well in Roatan, with manta rays and turtles in abundance and vibrant, tropical fish all around. But the greatest highlight was being in the ocean, breathing underwater, free of the wheelchair, moving my on-land paralyzed arms back and forth, swimming just like everyone else. It was a freedom from my reality and especially my physical limitations. All the pain and worries dissolve into the water, allowing my inner self to experience peace and presence. It was truly a magical experience, and I'm already planning my next trip!
Anything is possible… take the plunge.
