“Reaching Success with Your Bowel Program” is the focus of a workshop at the Reeve Summit 2021 led by Linda M. Schultz, Ph.D., CRRN. Schultz will share what she has learned in some 30 years as a clinical nurse-educator specializing in physical rehabilitation. “Nurse Linda,” as she is known in the spinal cord injury community, is a well-loved advocate for people with SCI regarded for her straight talk about difficult subjects. She works with healthcare providers in research and quality-improvement projects.

“A successful bowel program in a reasonable time frame is a concern of most individuals with neurogenic bowel,” Schultz says. “It promotes health, mental well-being, and improved independence. Unsuccessful management of the bowel has consequences for the quality of life and employment.”
Interactive Session Reviews Lifestyle Modifications to Manage Neurogenic Bowe
Schultz will outline a program's elements to manage neurogenic bowel based on a foundation of clinical experience and evidence-based research. She will review the difference between neurogenic bowel and constipation and describe the Bowel Program Technique. In addition, Schultz will address how foods and fluid intake, medication, supplements, and physical activity can affect bowel function, and offer tips on managing these lifestyle factors for better bowel health.
The session’s interactive format will enable participants to actively engage in real-time using comments and polls. Schultz will lead a Q&A discussion during which workshop attendees will be encouraged to share their own tips, successes, and challenges.

The second annual Reeve Summit: Where Care, Cure and Community Connect takes place April 27-29, 2021. “Reaching Success with Your Bowel Program” will go live on April 29 at 2-3 p.m. EDT. More than 40 virtual sessions will explore topics relevant to the paralysis community, including advocacy, caregiving, employment, research, and health and wellness. Participants around the globe will have a chance to hear from experts, ask questions, and share their own experiences of living with paralysis.
