Together with the spinal cord injury (SCI) community, the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation mourns the loss of Dr. David Apple, co-founder and founding medical director of the world-renowned Shepherd Center.

Dr. Apple was among the foremost champions of whole-person rehabilitation. His leadership transformed both the perception and practice of SCI rehabilitative medicine. Driven by a lifelong commitment to ensuring that people living with SCI could lead full lives marked by independence and dignity, he helped shape a model of care that continues to define the Shepherd Center as a leader in restoring lives and redefining recovery.

Dr. Apple’s impact extended far beyond Shepherd Center. He advanced the scientific landscape of SCI and served as a founding member and past president of the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA). He also helped establish the country’s largest recreation therapy program, one of many contributions reflecting his belief that individuals should return to the activities they love, discover new passions, and live fully after injury.

The Reeve Foundation collaborated with Dr. Apple and Shepherd on numerous initiatives over the years, including educational publications, video series, and staff development efforts. Under his leadership, our organizations partnered on Quality of Life Grant Program initiatives, peer and family support programs, and as co-founders of SCI Ventures -- the world’s first philanthropic venture fund dedicated to SCI.

Determined people change the world. Dr. Apple was an innovator whose work illuminated the path to progress. He not only changed the field of SCI, but helped define its future. The Reeve Foundation will forever honor Dr. Apple’s legacy as we extend our deepest condolences to his family and all those whose lives he touched.
