On May 1, The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released the final rule strengthening discrimination protections for people living with disabilities under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. These long-awaited updates address discrimination in medical treatment, adopts the U.S. Access Board’s standards on accessible medical equipment, and strengthens compliance around web accessibility. The final rule also prohibits the discriminatory use of value of life assessment methods.

The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation applauds HHS for the update to the regulations implementing Section 504, the first update in over 50 years. Thank you to the community of advocates whose voices were heard during the public comment period!

See the HHS Fact Sheet for more information on the rule.
