Most people living with paralysis and spinal cord injury have some form of bowel dysfunction. It differs from person to person, but, basically, it means the nerves that control the bowel no longer work properly. Not having a proper bowel management routine can cause health risks including Autonomic Dysreflexia, skin breakdown, and impaction depending on your injury and bowel condition. While there is no “one size fits all” plan for bowel care while living with paralysis, there are different steps to ensure overall improved health.
