The TCS New York City Marathon is days away! We have a full team this year ready to tackle 26.2 miles to raise funds and awareness for our cause. We reached out to our Team Reeve members to ask why they are participating in the marathon for the Reeve Foundation.

Joe Rooney

What inspired you to join Team Reeve?

My teammate Mikey Nichols inspired me to join Team Reeve. Since his injury in 2014, Mikey has been an unrelenting resource of hope, optimism, and motivation for our community. Mikey has transcended his physical limitations in utilizing his brave voice as a leader. That distinctly unique voice has been used to advocate for the "wheelchair free" world that he envisions. Mikey is an exemplary role model for everyone, especially those trying to find and create meaning in their lives. He has dedicated his life to helping others and creating a better future for those impacted by paralysis. I'm proud to join this most important fight with him as we represent Team Reeve in New York City.

What has been the hardest challenge that you have overcome?

The hardest challenge I've had to overcome was biking across the United States in the summer of 2011. In the summer of 2011, my friend from Ireland and I rode 3,844 miles from Spring Lake, New Jersey to the border of San Diego, California, USA and Tijuana, Mexico. The initial weeks of the trip were the most trying as our minds and bodies adapted to various logistics and the toll the mileage had on our bodies. We were able to make it across the country in 44 days, averaging 83 miles a day with 50 pounds of gear each. The experience taught me that your mind and body will assist you in overcoming new kinds of adversity.

What are you looking forward to the most on the day of the marathon?

I am most looking forward to experiencing the energy of the crowd with Mikey. Many runners attest to the fact that support on the racecourse is legendary. We will be feeding off that energy, especially the second half of the race!

Remember to follow us on Instagram to follow our team on race day. There is still time to support the team!
